It's both the coincidence and exchange of space, Freud painted from the reflection of himself in the mirror and viewers look at the reflection of the painting using mirror. Space and time are transformed. By standing between the mirror and the painting, viewers are looking at the reflection of the self-portrait reflected by real Freud, thus performing the fake impression of standing with Freud. The relation between viewers and freud is mutual.
